“Key Coding “as the word itself suggests; includes a physical key and the process of matching the key to the car.
In Late 90s manufacturers all around the world started making the car systems more secure by adding immobilizer system in the cars. The process included adding a transponder chip in the car key; which then emits a signal to the receiver of the Car ignition system. If the signal emitted by the transponder chip in the key is detected as “Wrong signal”, by the ignition system- the car won’t start.
Image above shows a structured arrangement of different parts in a typical immobilizer system. If any of the components in the system goes wrong, car won’t start.
All such immobilizer systems mainly consists of main three components:
- Key with transponder chip
- Immobilizer module
- Engine Control Module.
If any of this system goes wrong, car stops. Key coding is one such case for this security system. If the key gets damaged or if gets lost – “Key coding” is a must to do process for such a situation.
“ Key coding – Adding a new key to the system by programming the transponder chip or programming the transponder chip of the existing key. “
Immobilizer / key coding is used in all such situation, where ECM (Engine Control Module) Immobiler (control module) and Ignition key has lost its programmed code or is needed to be changed. In some cases even Instrument cluster module is also a part of the immobilizer system.
