With proper maintenance, how long can a family car last?

How many kilometers can a car run? 4.8 million kilometers. A Volvo P1800 sedan in the United States has ran nearly 4.8 million kilometers in 47 years since 1966, setting a Guinness World Record for the longest mileage of cars in the world. Of course, all this can not be separated from the car owner’s meticulous care. However, this car has been repaired twice, but the engine has not been replaced.

Can all cars run for so long? the answer is negative. Factors such as car quality, car environment and maintenance will affect the life of a car. The Volvo car, which runs 4.8 million kilometers, is obviously just an example.

So the question is, how long can a family car be driven with proper maintenance, among other factors?

A car is a large piece of machinery and equipment, and its life depends on the life of the parts. The most important of these is the “three big parts.” The “three big parts” of a car include the engine, transmission, and chassis. Any fatal damage to any of them is almost equivalent to the entire car being scrapped.

So let’s take a look at the life of the “three big pieces” first.

Due to the different structure of the gearbox, it is roughly divided into manual and automatic. The service life of the two is almost the same. As long as the maintenance is in place, they can be used almost indefinitely.

Of course, if it is really higher or lower, perhaps the manual gearbox is more resistant to operation. Looking at the chassis, in fact, many high-tech technologies have been applied to the chassis, and the quality of the chassis has risen to a level. Therefore, there is no clear indication of the service life of the chassis.

As long as no scratches and other accidents occur, it can be used almost indefinitely like the gearbox.

Finally, we look at the “heart” engine of a car. Its working environment is very complicated and the daily wear is the highest, so it has a scrap period. Generally, engine life is 300,000 kilometers to 100 kilometers.

With proper maintenance, we take an intermediate value of 700,000 kilometers.

Now it is estimated that the chassis transmission has an infinite life and the engine has a life of 700,000 kilometers. According to the average family running 30,000 kilometers a year, if a family car is properly maintained, the service life can reach 23 years.

However, this is only an ideal value, and there are many factors that affect car life.

And although the current regulations have cancelled the rules for the retirement of private cars, they will be automatically guided to scrap after the mileage reaches 600,000 kilometers. In this way, even if you maintain it properly, it will be scrapped after reaching the required mileage. Of course, the longer the car is driven, the higher the maintenance costs, so it is the most cost-effective to scrap the car after the economic life.
